Overview

Bhutan now applies a daily Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) to most international visitors as part of its high-value, low-impact tourism policy.

International Tourists (Non-Regional)

  • USD 100 per person per night — mandatory for adults staying anywhere in Bhutan.
  • Children 6–12 years: 50% discount (USD 50 per night).
  • Children under 5 years: no SDF charge.

This fee directly supports Bhutan’s education, healthcare, environmental conservation, infrastructure, and cultural preservation efforts.

Note: SDF is charged for each night spent in Bhutan, and is normally paid in advance (usually as part of your visa/permit process).

Regional Tourist SDF (India, Bangladesh, Maldives)

Tourists from these neighbouring countries do not pay the USD fee, but instead pay a different rate:

  • Nu. 1,200 per person per night (approx. INR 1,200 for Indian nationals).
  • Children 6–12 pay half; under 5 are exempt.

Indian visitors typically do not need a visa, but must obtain an entry/visitor permit and pay the nightly SDF.

Visa Fee (for Most Nationalities)

  • A one-time Bhutan visa fee of USD 40 per person is charged for tourists other than Indian/Bangladeshi/Maldivian nationals.
  • This is separate from the nightly SDF.

Other Costs (Not Included in SDF)

The SDF is a tourism levy only, and does not include items like:

  • Flight tickets to/from Paro International Airport
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Internal transport (cars, drivers)
  • Tour guide fees (guides required outside core cities)
  • Entrance fees to dzongs, museums, trails, etc.
  • Travel insurance and personal expenses

So your total trip cost will usually be higher than just the SDF + visa price.
